Shiloh submitted for approval to become a National Historic Site.

On Thursday, March 18, 2010, the Alabama Historical Commission unanimously voted to move forward with the application to the United States Department of Interior to have the Shiloh sites submitted for approval to become a National Historic Site. We are all excited about the news. When doing the application, it was suggested that all rural churches/cemeteries/pick-up sites should be included in the application and up for consideration, however each of these churches that are interested will also move forward but each must do their own application along with the history of that particular site. This would not h ave happened had it not been for the application submitted by Shiloh. There were 3-4 churches that were strong and may want to consider doing an application. Those churches were Cooper Chapel AME Zion, Mt. Zion AME Zion, Nebraska, Cooper Chapel AME Zion, Mt. Zion AME Zion, Nebraska, St. Paul MB/Armstrong School, Macon County Training School.

Elizabeth Sims Awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Alabama Historical Commission

In October 2009, Elizabeth Sims, an alumnus of the Shiloh Rosenwald School, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award on behalf of the Alabama Historical Commission for her commitment and excellence in historical preservation. Specifically, the AHC recognized her work in documenting, restoring, and promoting the historic Shiloh Rosenwald School. Sim, an Auburn University research administrator, is working with students from Auburn's College of Architecture, Design, and Construction to restore the school. Sims formed the Shiloh Community Restoration Foundation in 2006. She received a $50,000 grant fro the project from the Lowe's Charitable and Education Fund, a program administered by the National Trust for Historical Preservation. According to James Schwartz, Editor of Preservation, Sims rallied academics, students, alumni, and local home improvement stores to restore "the school that offered African American students a beacon of hope in the days before integration." He says of Sims: "she practically defines persistence, and her community's all the better for it."
